Art Show

The day in which love is universally known, Junction City’s very own Opera House held an art show that promoted the arts of JCHS’s very talented artists. The show which began at 6pm had a very quick turnout of local support from people around  town accompanied by a nice entertainment for audiences coming to see the show “A Trip to Bountiful” which debuted later that night. The talented artists showed many pieces of art in different forms  and techniques such as watercolor, acrylic, oil, and pencil they were able to give locals a sneak peek of what kind of artists are within our High School.

The art show showcased 20 pieces of painting and drawings created by about 13 artists.  Mr. Goheen who is the art, football, and  basketball teacher, and the Kansas State University Student teacher Mr. Cunningham helped get the advanced art students get into the show. Most of these artists have been practicing their talents since they were little or just in the past two years.
Artists like Shekinah Bailey a senior who enjoys art that includes profile pictures. “Yeah,  I really like creating profile paintings because of the ability to expresses emotion which can tell a story to them” she says.

Many of the artist find inspiration from other artists, their surroundings, or just for the fun of it. Artist like Brianna Torres whose style is graffiti and is into artist like Bansky who is a British artist whose art which is not just street art with message that has an impact. Like Bansky whose art has meaning and attraction, artist Joyce McMillan wants her art to be as beautiful as well as truly saying something.

“For both of my paintings I wanted to have them say something a true statement,” says the senior, “Like with my painting  with the girl and flowers speaks towards Hippie culture of freedom and individuality, while my second painting speaks not just about my experience with people in my life being consumed by their own addiction of cigarettes but also Corporations consuming peoples money and not caring that it is causing more harm.”

Other artists like Junior Samantha Rodriguez, who moved from Hinesville, Georgia, made her outstanding animal drawings not biased towards one specific art technique. “I really don’t have one particular favorite style, but for the drawings I just wanted to create them because I like animals and they look so pretty.” Like many artists who find inspiration in many places senior Anne Knipe finds anything around her give her the drive for her art.

“When it comes to inspiration there is not just one outlet for me” she says, “I really get it from my peers in class, friends I have made on the internet, or just the internet in general.”

The art show case, although definitely not the last, was a great night to see up and coming artists express themselves. So if you happen to find yourself walking through the Commons, just take a quick minute to observe someones art. Just appreciating other peers art is not only greatly given, but you may just find some inspiration for yourself.
