Junction City High varsity baseball played a double header against Wamego High School on Friday, April 10. With two outs in the inning, a ball was hit deep into the outfield that looked like it was going to drop and score a run. In that moment, a diving catch was made to save the run and keep the shutout alive. The team went on to win both games with scores of 6-0 and 12-6.
“I was going to slide, but then I heard Conrad say, ‘go get that 8,’ and decided to dive instead,” said center fielder junior Khaliel Walker.
That play ended the inning and gave the team a lot of momentum. Instead of allowing a run, Junction City came back strong in the next inning and scored six runs, which helped take control of the game. The team continued to build off that energy throughout both games, leading to a sweep.
“I feel the team showed extreme toughness and focus and kept our four core values—hustle, effort, attitude, and toughness (HEAT)—and it led us to victory,” said head Coach James Denton.
