Every year, on a Friday in April, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) hosts a National Day of Silence, this year being hosted today, April 12, 2019.

The Day of Silence is a student-led national event where people take a vow of silence in order to highlight the silencing and erasure of LGBT+  people in schools.

GLSEN aims to create “safe and affirming” schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression–a goal they hope to emphasize through their Day of Silence.

The event is organized by the Junction City High School Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and has been held for the past four years. GSA, as well as the event, are advised by Government teacher Reina Cruz.
