April 15, 2019
On March 31, 2019 everyone in the music industry was hit hard with the news that Nipsey Hussle had been shot by a then-unidentified assailant. Many fans and celebrities alike took to Twitter to give their condolences to the late rapper.
Nipsey Hussle was an American Hip-Hop artist, entrepreneur, and father. He was born Ermias Joseph Asghedom in Los Angeles, California on August 15, 1985. He started popping back up in the mid-2000s producing mixtape after mixtape such as ‘Slauson Boy’, ‘Bullets Have No Name Vol 1-3’, and ‘The Marathon’. With each release getting better lyrically and with the subject matter, eventually, they led to his debut album ‘Victory Lap’ which was nominated for best rap album at the 62nd Grammy Awards.
Along with his successful music career, Nipsey Hussle was a heavily involved activist in his hometown of Los Angeles, California. He was involved in opening up community centers for teens in low-income areas and he also worked to raise awareness to decrease gang violence and the harm it was having on predominately black areas. Nipsey also had a meeting with L.A.P.D. the week of his untimely passing.
Surprisingly, all the most notorious gangs in Los Angeles held a public truce in honor of Nipsey Hussle’s death. They led a memorial march through L.A. celebrating the positivity and everything Hussle stood for during his lifetime. In all, we can all learn the importance of doing something bigger than yourself in your local community-even the smallest things can make the greatest impact.
