One judge, two teams, 5 buzzers, and 5 students from different schools competing to beat the opposing team.  Nick Dombrowski and Zach Bollen are both students who both compete and excel at scholar’s bowl tournaments.

“You show up, compete, and see what you know compared to other students from other schools. It’s really fun because you get to meet new people from different schools and it’s a good way to hang out with your friends and still challenge yourself,” said Sr. Nick Dombrowski

The scholar’s bowl in lack of better words is the equivalent to Jeopardy. They ask a question, you buzz in, you answer, you get points. Five students from opposing schools go head to head to see who knows the most. The questions asked are split up from various subjects such as language arts, world language, sports, science, math etc. “We all have our different specialties. Nick knows a lot about Math and I have Language Arts so it’s just a matter of being confident in what you know” said Jr. Zach Bollen

JCHS math teacher Mr. Timothy Hickert is the head coach, sponsor, and travels with the scholar’s bowl team. Our scholars bowl team has traveled to Washburn Rural, Washburn University, Chapman, Lawrence, Emporia and they will also be traveling to Flint Hills and Wichita.

Mr. Hickert and his team recently just traveled to Wichita Northwest yesterday, February 2 where they took first place going 9-0.

“Regionals yesterday went as well as we could’ve possibly hoped for. We went 9-0 and competed to beat everybody. We struggled early on but won our games anyways. We played in some really close games but were fortunate to win them all. The planets were aligned perfectly and it’s just as any sport where every shot falls for your team, sometimes every throw from the quarterback is a perfect dime and every ball going down the lane is a strike.” said Mr. Hickert.

Our Scholars Bowl team will be traveling to Derby February 11th to compete in the state tournament.
