REVIEW: “Sweetener” by Ariana Grande

Breah Turner, Staff Writer

Ariana Grande released her new album “Sweetener” with Republic Records on August 17, 2018. She typically makes pop music that appeals to a younger audience, and “Sweetener” keeps her on that path. This album has received a lot of good reviews, but I personally, did not enjoy it.

Ariana Grande’s album “Sweetener” includes 15 songs: Raindrops (An Angel Cried), Blazed (feat. Pharrell Williams), The Light is Coming (feat. Nicki Minaj), R.E.M, God is a Woman, Sweetener, Successful, Everytime, Breathin, No Tears Left to Cry, Borderline (feat. Missy Elliot), Better Off, Goodnight n’ Go, Pete Davidson, and Get Well Soon.

Ariana has a pretty and talented voice, but all of her songs on this album sound similar. If she had more variety and meaningful songs, her album could have been more successful. Her singing alone is unique and beautiful to hear, but the songs just weren’t very original or diverse. Some songs stood out a little more from the others, though. Her song, “R.E.M” sounded a little different than the rest- it wasn’t like her typical songs where she yells the whole time and hits high notes with the same background music. It was more upbeat, but still calm and soft. It was also a consistent song, and it is the only one I actually enjoyed.

Ariana Grande’s album is successful and many people love it. All in all, I think it’s okay, but just not that special or important. I recommend listening to other artists who make more diverse and enjoyable songs, if you’re looking for music artists that use their talent to their full potential.
