Snapchat’s New Update Is A Major Fail
March 2, 2018
The new Snapchat update has received some mixed reviews over the past couple of weeks – mainly bad ones. There is good reasoning for the hatred too; for starters, the update is anything but simple. The layout is messy and unorganized, with every feature in places that are basically hidden.
On the right side of the camera screen, public stories are shown. News articles and trending pieces, as well as any of your friends’ public stories, are scattered throughout the right side of the app. On the left side of the camera screen, your Snapchat friends, conversations, and stories are laid out.
Nothing is in chronological order, leaving you to forget who you were even talking to. Each of your friends now has their Bitmoji beside their name, but stories replace it if they have one posted. If you want to watch anybody’s story, you either have to hope Snapchat brings them to the top of your page, search them, or scroll down as far as it takes until you find the person you’re looking for.
Obviously, this is difficult, annoying, and a lot more work than the previous version of Snapchat.
Additionally, if you want to view your own story, you have to click your Bitmoji in the upper left corner of the screen. Here it shows how many views your first story has gotten and how many screenshots your story has overall. By clicking the story button, you can see each individual picture or video you posted on your story. Since it’s so hard to find people’s stories, you eventually give up unless that person is in the top of your page – which means views will inevitably go down for all of us.
If Snapchat wants to bring updates in the future, they should develop features useful, like a “Streak” button to send all your streaks to at once, instead of scrolling through all of your friends and finding who you have a streak with.
Overall, the update is messy and hard to navigate.
