The Geary County Board of Education met on Monday, February 6th, and voted 4-2 to hold a special election to consider building a new high school on a new site, per committee recommendations.

The JCHS Way Forward steering committee formally recommended that the board of education build a new high school on a new site not exceeding a cost of 1.5 million and with no increase to taxes.

This motion is contingent on the school district receiving the March 2017 federal heavy impact aid and 48% matching funds from the state pending bond approval.

One member, Dr. Anwar Khoury, disagreed with the recommendation. His concern was that the project will exceed estimated costs and was not bid to find the cheapest price. He believes that a new high school could be built for approximately 85 million.

The bond election will occur on May 9th, with community members being able to vote on the recommendation.
