Beneath The Surface of JC Singers

When most people think about school choir they think it’s boring, not important, or simply just an easy A. But Junction City’s High Schools own JC Singers proved there was so much more to them beyond the surface than what people choose to see.

Most of the students that are in JC Singers never would’ve guessed 4 years ago that they would be doing music, and having it to turn out to be something that they love. “I got forced into choir, I’ll be honest,” said Keaton Petite, “I just got put in the class, and it turned out that I really enjoyed it”. Petite like most students started his music career his freshman year starting in the Freshtones, a choir specifically for freshman. He is now one of the top singers in the state of Kansas, and also got the chance to go to nationals.

Choir isn’t just about singing, or attending and winning competitions though. It’s a way to open yourself up, and create strong relationships with other people who are just like you. “Usually I don’t really talk to people in other classes,” Megan Berry said, “but in choir I get to meet people with my same interest”. Berry went on to explaining the different relationships she’s created, and said that the JC Singers is her little choir family. The bonds that are made in that group are sometimes stronger than the ones they make outside of it.

Some students like Isaac Williams entered the world of music, because it’s one of the best ways to express yourself. “My 7th grade teacher Ms. Holzer taught me in order to express yourself, you should do it in art form” said Williams. Several people have a hard time expressing themselves verbally; so to do it in other forms such as music is amazing, because it helps people to open up.

The JC Singers aren’t just all about fun and friendships though. They dedicate themselves and their time to work hard at achieving their musical group goals. “JC Singers is a lot of pop and contemporary,” said Berry, “which usually has harder rhythms and bigger jumps than a classical piece would have”. The group also adds in a lot of additional things such as different sound movements to add a bit of spice to their songs. “We are also adding in tempo relating things like claps with our hands and our laps,” Lauryn Gaines said, “It’s a lot of pop and splitting between sections”. It’s very difficult to create those different tempo sound movements while accurately singing the piece at the same time, so the fact that this group is capable of doing so is a huge bonus and achievement for them.

It does take dedication and time to be a part of choir, but there’s so much to it than learning songs and performing them. You can create relationships that impact you, you can express yourself in ways you never thought were possible, it’s a way to open up and take chances you never would before, and so much more. So take a chance, and do something new, you might come to find out that it’s something you love.
