Wilson, Baldwin rush JC to a 40-0 shutout over Seamen!
September 28, 2015
The Junction City Blue Jays ended their 50 points per game scoring streak, but the more important winning streak remains intact. The Blue Jays have won their fourth game this season making them 4-0. Although they lost their 50 ppg streak, that doesn’t take away from the 40 point shutout performance Friday night against Seamen.
The Blue Jays picked up right where they left off last week, with their offense scoring on three of their first four drives. The defense, other than a defensive facemask penalty, did not give up a single first down to Seamen until just under three minutes left in the quarter.
The Blue Jays first drive started with great field position. In six plays they had rushed the ball for a total of 32 yards to the end zone for their first touchdown by Raye Wilson putting them up just 6-0 after the PAT kick was blocked.
After a quick three and out, the Seamen offense had come up with nothing but another 4th down punt that moved the ball on to Junction City’s half of the field. They again ran the ball down field, capping off the drive with an electric 27 yard rush TD by Jovon Baldwin.
The touchdown fired up the Junction City defense which forced another turnover on downs after the Blue Jays secondary kept the ball in Seamen’s quarterback Dalton Cowan’s hands every play keeping him from completing any of his passes this drive and forcing him to scramble twice for only a yard.
Another three and out put the Blue Jays offense in position for a 40 yard pass from Ryan Hennington to Baldwin completely switching sides of the field for the Blue Jays. After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called on Seamen, Hennington went for another deep bomb into the corner of the end zone that was intercepted by Seamen’s #8 Alessandro Savianto.
This interception changed the intensity for both teams, as the JC defense allowed three first downs the next drive. After another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, this time on Junction City, Seamen’s offense finally brought the ball to JC’s half of the field. The Blue Jays did not want Seamen to have a chance in this game, on homecoming night, so after this penalty; you could see the defense get their heads back into the game. Cowan hikes the ball and Terrell Wilson is in his face immediately, recovering a fumble and taking it back 43 yards for a defensive Blue Jays touchdown to end the first quarter.
The second quarter started off with Seamen’s offense gaining 39 yards on a pass from Cowan to #3 Walker Bassett. A few short yardage gains later, Cowan and the Seamen offense elected to pass the ball and it is intercepted by Timothy Bell and returned 65 yards putting the JC offense in positon for a 5 yard TD run by Baldwin.
The following drive, after two first downs, Seamen finds themselves in a 4th and 1 situation and could potentially bring themselves back into the game. Expecting the run, the vaunted JC defense fills up the box looking to blitz. Then, after Cowen hikes the ball, he drops back to throw and the JC secondary is there to break up the intended pass. Most would question the call to pass the ball on a short yardage situation as it looked like Super Bowl 49 all over again.
Both offenses appeared rather slow after this drive to finish off the half. The Blue Jays were in the lead 26-0 coming into the half. At halftime the 2015 Junction City Homecoming King and Queen were named. Congratulations to Nick Arneson and Myrissa Humphreys on their Homecoming King and Queen titles!
Coming into the second half, Junction City gained two first downs after a Delay of Game penalty was called and Jovon Baldwin again, found himself in the end zone after a 19 yard rushing TD bringing the score up to 33-0 early in the half.
Just as Seamen looked as if they’re night couldn’t get any worst, Timothy Bell again, comes up with an interception putting JC’s offense in position for a killer 81 yard TD run by Baldwin, reaching the end zone 20 yards before anyone else on the field could. This touchdown was the final dagger in the hearts of Seamen’s confidence.
Following this touchdown, both Seamen and Junction City’s offenses looked slow, as neither team could reach the end zone the rest of the night. The only time either team came close was the final play for Seamen’s offense in a 4th and goal situation 11 yards from the end zone. Junction City was not about to end homecoming night with a Seamen touchdown, as Cowen connects with one of his receivers but is stuffed at the 1 yard line giving JC possession to run the clock out.
The final score was 40-0, a complete shutout that Junction City had forced on homecoming night thanks to a 303 total rushing yards effort led by Wilson and Baldwin. This victory keeps JC’s record unblemished at 4-0.
This Friday the Blue Jays are on the road against Washburn Rural, which looks to be JC’s biggest challenge so far. Another undefeated team who hasn’t allowed their opponent to score more than 14 points.
Although they haven’t played any challenging teams themselves, this doesn’t look to be another cake walk. After this week’s game they will again travel to play Manhattan. Will the Silver Trophy return to Junction City? We will all find out as the two rivals play October 9th.
