“The saddest day of my life was when my dad first had to deploy to Afghanistan.

I remember it vaguely, but enough to talk about it.

I remember sitting down on the couch and watching my favorite cartoon at the time, Phineas and Ferb, good show. I was watching, and I heard my dad come down the hallway. I look behind me, and he had his bags. He stood there and looked at me, and he said, ‘I’ll be gone for a while.’

I asked why, and he said he was going to be going to war. I asked him, ‘What’s war?’ and he said he would tell me when I was older.

I saw my mom crying, she told me she would be right back, she had to go to the airport.

At that point I really understood what was happening, and I had to let it happen.”

Birds of the Nest is an in-depth look at the significant moments in the life of individuals in our community.
